Leather patch vs embroidery on beanies

Battle Born Clothing does both in the same shop: cuff embroidery on two commercial heads and laser-engraved leather patches on an 80-watt CO2 laser. We have no reason to steer you either way, so here is the honest comparison.

Cost per beanie

Decoration only, per beanie; add the blank
QuantityCuff embroideryLeather patch (glued)
12-23$8.00$8.00
24-47$7.00$7.50
48-71$6.50$7.00
72-95$6.50$6.50
96-119$6.00$6.00
120-143$6.00$5.50
144+$5.00$5.00

Embroidery adds $18.99 digitizing once per design. Patches have no setup fee; sewn-on adds $1.00 per beanie. On a first order of 24 the patch is cheaper by about $7 total because there is no digitizing; by 144 they are identical.

Look

Thread on knit is the classic beanie. It reads as team gear, crew gear, school spirit. A leather patch reads as retail: brewery, outfitter, ranch, lifestyle brand. Neither is better; they signal different things. If your trucker hats carry a patch, match it on the beanie. If your polos carry an embroidered left chest, thread on the beanie keeps the program consistent.

Durability

Embroidery is part of the knit; it lasts the life of the beanie and survives machine washing. A glued patch holds through normal wear and hand washing; we sample-press each color before a run and have the sewn option for buyers who want stitches as insurance or as a look. Engraving itself is permanent.

Feel

Thread adds nothing you can feel. A patch adds a little stiffness to the front of the cuff, more on a thin knit than on a chunky one, which is why patches look and feel best on the Sportsman SP90 and the Zapped waffle beanie. Lined beanies (SP12FL, SP12SL) hide the back of embroidery behind the lining.

What we need either way

Vector artwork (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) or a 300 dpi PNG, the quantity, the beanie style and color, and your pick of thread colors or leather color. We send one digital proof before production; the proof is where you see the simplified embroidery or the engraved patch at size and change your mind for free. Standard turnaround is 28 days from proof approval for either method, and we redo our own errors free.

Questions

Which lasts longer on a beanie?

Embroidery, strictly. A glued patch holds through normal wear; sewn-on adds a stitch line for extra security.

Can a leather patch be in our brand color?

The leather comes in natural, browns and black. The engraving is a single tone. For brand colors, use thread.

Can we see both before deciding?

Yes. Ask on the quote form and the proof will show the logo as thread and as a patch on your chosen beanie.
